Who can buy Car Sharing Insurance?


This insurance is intended for people who would like to borrow a colleague, friend or family member’s car. Both the owner of the car and the person borrowing the car can buy this insurance, but you will need the driver’s details and driving licence number to complete the purchase.

How old do you need to be to use Admiral Car Sharing Insurance?


We cover drivers with full licences from 17 years and up, however, for more powerful or expensive cars we may restrict cover based on age.

How long can I buy this insurance for?


We offer cover from one hour right up to 30 days, so that you can buy the insurance for the period you need it instead of having to buy more than you want. You can always extend your policy through your account, or buy more to top it up if you find you need more!

Is there an excess?


Yes, there is a compulsory excess of £750 on the policy, and additional excesses for windscreen damage (£25) or replacement (£95).

Can the owner be paid for the use of their vehicle?


No, Car Sharing Insurance has been designed to enable affordable car sharing between colleagues, family and friends. If the owner is paid an amount which exceeds the cost of any fuel used, wear and tear to the vehicle, or any parking fines payable, this will invalidate the insurance.

Does the owner need to have insurance before lending
their car?


Yes, Car Sharing Insurance is additional cover – the vehicle must have alternative insurance in place for the duration of the rental. There must be alternative insurance in place for the duration of the Car Sharing insurance policy. This insurance cannot be used with vehicles insured on trade or fleet insurance policies.

Can the owner buy this cover for themselves?


No, this cover is exclusively for people who do not own the vehicle. However, the owner can buy the cover for the driver, as long as they have the driver's permission and personal details.

Can the policyholder drive any car?


This insurance does not include ‘Driving Other Cars’, therefore the driver is only insured on this policy to drive the vehicle that appears on the Certificate of Motor Insurance. You can have multiple Car Sharing Insurance policies for the same time period if you would like to be able to drive many cars at once.

For more powerful or expensive cars we may restrict cover based on age, so you may be able to drive some cars and not others.

Is the policyholder insured to drive abroad?


No, this policy only covers you in the UK territorial limits.

Can the policyholder build their own No Claims Bonus?


Yes. If you have Car Sharing Insurance for more than 30 days in 12 months and don't make a claim, Admiral will include one introductory year of No Claims Bonus if you purchase a policy from Admiral, Bell, Diamond or Elephant.

You will be able to use this No Claims Bonus one year after the Car Sharing insurance policy has ended, providing that you do not make a claim during this time.

As the policyholder, can I use this insurance to drive someone else's car and still have full insurance on my own car?


Yes, this insurance will not invalidate your full insurance on your own car. However, if you make a claim on either policy, you will be required to disclose this when purchasing any future insurance policies.

If you are the owner and someone borrows your car and makes a subsequent claim this will not impact your driving history or require any further disclosures when you next purchase insurance.

Will it affect the owner’s No Claims Bonus if a claim is made?


No, any claims made won't affect the car owner's No Claims Bonus. As such, they don't need to declare it to their insurers.

Can the car owner and the Car Sharing Insurance policyholder drive the vehicle during the period of temporary insurance?


Yes, this product is great for sharing driving on long journeys as the car owner will still be covered by their own annual insurance policy.

Can I add other drivers on to my policy?


No, you cannot add drivers on to the policy while it is running. If you would like someone else to use your car, you can take out a separate policy to allow them to use it.

Can the cover be renewed or extended?


Yes, Car Sharing Insurance can be bought as many times as you like - and you can easily extend active policies by logging in to your Customer Account.

Can the cover be cancelled?


The policyholder can cancel their cover through their Customer Account or by e-mailing carsharing@admiralgroup.co.uk with their policy number.

If the cover has not started yet, you will receive a full refund. However, due to the short-term nature of the insurance, we do not provide a refund for policies that are cancelled after the policy has started.

Can any remaining days cover be transferred onto another vehicle?


No, the insurance is directly linked to the vehicle and cannot be modified. If you are unsure how long you need to buy insurance for, you can purchase a few days or hours and then purchase more later.

How soon after getting the cover can the car be used?


If you request instant cover, the policy will begin as soon as payment is accepted.

Is breakdown cover provided with the policy?


Breakdown cover is not provided with this policy. The owner of the car may have existing breakdown cover that may extend to a Car Sharing Insurance policyholder.

Please note that some breakdown providers will only cover an incident if the person driving is on the main insurance policy and may not cover someone driving using Car Sharing Insurance.
